Becoming a Chartered PR practitioner

This week my professional body, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, has been promoting the importance to members of becoming a Chartered PR practitioner.

To become and stay Chartered, you need to keep up with your continuing professional development (CPD), and I think this is the message - it is an acknowledgment that you can always improve at what you do. None of us is the finished article, and will never be.

Becoming Chartered certainly doesn't automatically make you a leading practitioner of public relations. Rather, it is demonstrating competence and your commitment to developing as a professional, which in turn shows that you care about doing a good job. More widely, this is then about strengthening the profession so it can deliver more value to organisations and society as a whole.

So thanks, CIPR, for running the campaign. More PR practitioners becoming Chartered is a good thing. Read more below on the benefits of chartership according to CIPR.

The benefits of chartership

Working in a PR consultancy?

For members running PR and communications consultancies, having a chartered team gives you a competitive advantage. It shows clients that your business does things the right way and your team is accountable to the same high standards as them. Getting chartered and supporting your team to achieve the same recognition is a great way to retain and attract the best PR talent.

Working in-house?

For PR and communications leaders in all sectors, supporting your team to achieve Chartership demonstrates an investment in the growth and development of your people. It assures stakeholders that the company's reputation is safe and in the best hands.

Wearing your Chartered PR Practitioner badge

Chartered PR Practitioners demonstrate their accreditation with the designation Chart.PR, a Chartered PR Practitioner logo and branded assets for online use.

I was recently invited to join the advisory council to the Board of my professional body, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). I want to see how I can do my bit to promote my profession.

This is not a rude question. As an ex-journalist, I knew the interview was often my best chance to get the story. For the interviewee, they can be a positive experience also.
